John Thibdeau

John is currently a PhD student in the department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. As an undergraduate he studied physics and philosophy, receiving a BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He taught math and physics in Kuwait for three years before earning an MA in religious studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research focuses on the role of religious practice in the disciplining of subjectivities in contemporary Egypt, as well as the influence of Sufi aesthetics in the construction, imagination, and performance of Egyptian national and normative Muslim identities.
