Mirjam Mencej is the professor of Folklore Studies at the department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Apart from witchcraft, Mencej has studied folklore and vernacular religion. Her monograph Styrian Witches in European Perspective was published this year.
Based on her ethnographic fieldwork in the area, Mencej describes witchcraft from a variety of angles, from psychological to anthropological and historical, providing a detailed understanding of witchcraft as part of the lived social reality of the community.
