BOOKS
Social Identities Between the Sacred and the Secular
Edited by Abby Day, Giselle Vincett and Christopher R. Cotter
Ashgate AHRC/ESRC Religion and Society Series
Website price:£49.50 (Regular price: £55.00)
http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781409456773
Focusing on the important relationship between the ‘sacred’ and the ‘secular’, this book demonstrates that it is not paradoxical to think in terms of both secular and sacred or neither, in different times and places. International experts from a range of disciplinary perspectives draw on local, national, and international contexts to provide a fresh analytical approach to understanding these two contested poles. Exploring such phenomena at an individual, institutional, or theoretical level, each chapter contributes to the central message of the book – that the ‘in between’ is real, embodied and experienced every day and informs, and is informed by, intersecting social identities.
Social Identities between the Sacred and the Secular provides an essential resource for continued research into these concepts, challenging us to re-think where the boundaries of sacred and secular lie and what may lie between

Narratives of Sorrow and Dignity
Japanese Women, Pregnancy Loss, and Modern Rituals of Grieving
Bardwell L. Smith
Paperback | 416 pages
£22.50 | 11 July 2013 | 978-0-19-994215-2
Bardwell L. Smith offers a fresh perspective on mizuko kuyo, the Japanese ceremony performed to bring solace to those who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion. Showing how old and new forms of myth, symbol, doctrine, praxis, and organization combine and overlap in contemporary mizuko kuyo, Smith provides critical insight from many angles: the sociology of the family, the power of the medical profession, the economics of temples, the import of ancestral connections, the need for healing in both private and communal ways and, perhaps above all, the place of women in modern Japanese religion. http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199942152.do#.Ug3U7W3g8gI
Red Sea Wars on the Eve of Islam
G.W. Bowersock
Leading historian G.W. Bowersock provides a narrative account of a fascinating but overlooked chapter in pre-Islamic Arabian history — the holy war between Christian Ethiopians and Jewish Arabs in the sixth century AD.
Hardback | 208 pages
£15.99 | 25 July 2013 | 978-0-19-973932-5
Just prior to the rise of Islam, in the sixth century AD, southern Arabia was embroiled in a holy war between Christian Ethiopians and Jewish Arabs. The Jewish kingdom, composed of ethnic Arabs who had converted to Judaism more than a century before, had launched a bloody pogrom against Christians in the region. The ruler of Ethiopia, who claimed descent from the union of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and even was rumored to possess an object no less venerable than the Ark of the Covenant, aspired both to protect the persecuted Christians and to restore Ethiopian control in the Arabian Peninsula. Though little known today, this was an international war that involved both the Byzantine Empire, who had established Christian churches in Ethiopia beginning in the fourth century, and the Sasanian Empire in Persia, who supported the Jews in a proxy war with Byzantium. http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199739325.do#.Ug3VSG3g8gI

CFP: 2014 POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE: BODIES: BRIDGES AND BOUNDARIES MONDAY 6 and TUESDAY 7 JANUARY, CHRIST CHURCH, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Wendell Berry suggests that ‘when we say the word “body” theologically, we cannot distinguish in an absolute way whether we mean our own human bodies, Jesus’ human body, Christ’s bodily presence in the elements of the Eucharist, or the social body called the church’. Our experience of life, salvation and sanctification is an embodied experience, but what this means is far from clear given that bodies have a liminal character as both a defining boundary of the self and a communicative bridge to the outside world, both immanent and transcendent. This conference seeks to explore the interaction between theological and religious conceptions of the body, both individual and corporate, and the lived experience and praxis of those bodies in the world.
This conference aims to gather postgraduate students. We invite critical and constructive papers of 20 minutes in length from all disciplines concerned with theology and religion.
Topics of interest may include, but are not limited to, theological approaches to:
– Mind as embodied and environmentally embedded
– Doctrines such as incarnation, resurrection and ascension
– Soteriology and sanctification of the body
– Bodies, passions and emotions
– Sexuality and gender
– The body in sacrament and ritual
– Church as the body of Christ
– Changing conceptions of the body in history
– Bodily language and metaphors in scripture and theology
– Ethical considerations of technology and the body
– Communion and communication
– Negotiating social, political and cultural bodies
Please submit your abstract (500 words maximum) to tobias.tan@theology.ox.ac.uk. The deadline for submissions is 25 October 2013.
Further information about registration, plenary speakers and precise timings will be available around October. Accommodation and evening meals will not be provided, but it is hoped to offer a list of accommodation options.

CFP: ASIA IN MOTION: HERITAGE AND TRANSFORMATION at the National University of Singapore, July 17-19, 2014
The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the Asia Research Institute (ARI), and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) of the National University of Singapore are pleased to announce the inaugural AAS-in-Asia conference, “Asia in Motion: Heritage and Transformation.” We seek to attract a wide range of panel proposals from humanists and social scientists, as well as reflective practitioners from the worlds of policy, civil society, journalism, and other professional fields.
The AAS-in-Asia conference will build upon emerging visions and trends in Asian studies within Asia. By bringing together scholars and specialists on Asia within Asia as well as from other parts of the world at a gathering in Asia, we hope to spark new and fruitful collaborations. The AAS also expects to reach out to scholars of Asia who might not usually attend an AAS conference in North America. It is our hope that the conference will stimulate new networks among scholars within Asia and beyond, providing broader inter-continental connections for the future of Asian studies.
Please note: If you have already submitted a proposal for the 2014 AAS Annual Conference in Philadelphia, you are still eligible to submit a proposal for consideration for the AAS-in-Asia conference in Singapore.
For more details regarding this conference including proposal submission instructions, please go to http://www.aas-in-asia.org/index.htm
The deadline for proposal submission is October 31, 2013 at 5:00pm E.S.T.
