Call for Papers:
The Gypsy Lore Society annual meeting and conference on Gypsy/Romani Studies for 2013 will be held from the 12th – 14th of September at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Papers on any aspect of Gypsy/Romani Studies are most welcome. Please send abstracts via e-mail attachment (maximum 500 words) to the program chair, Dr Colin Clark. Please note all abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the local organising committee. Submissions should include the author’s name, institutional affiliation (if relevant), address, daytime telephone and e-mail address. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is May 31, 2013 and you will be notified if your paper has been accepted by June 30th, 2013.

This interdisciplinary conference welcomes participants from a range of academic disciplines including history, folklore, anthropology, divinity and sociology whose research interests cover a wide range of topics exploring varying methods used by different cultures (both now and in the past) to look into the future and the rationale for so doing. The future has always held a fascination for humankind especially in times of tribulation and this is worthy of academic discussion in light of the changes affecting so many of us in our current global context. The role in culture of seers and prophets, by whatever name they are known, and the use of rituals, drugs and sacred sites will be examined.
We are delighted to welcome Michael Hunter, Emeritus Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London as our keynote speaker. His paper, ‘Boyle’s legacy: Second Sight in English and Scottish Thought in the Long Eighteenth Century’ is based on his recent research. It follows the success of his seminal work, The Occult Laboratory; Magic, Science and Second Sight in Late 17th-Century Scotland (2001) and will set the tone for the conference.
An exhibition by artist Nicola Moss supports this conference. It is already available to view in the James MacKay Hall on a drop-in basis.

The Glastonbury Goddess Conference and Fringe is a spiritual and cultural feast!!

The Conference itself lasts for six days, with an additional three days of Fringe day workshops with well-known Goddess presenters, a sweatlodge and Glastonbury Tor Labrynth walk.

DIGITAL MEDIA AND SACRED TEXT

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Cognition and Culture
The Laboratory for the Experimental Research of Religion at Masaryk University is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cognition and Culture. The successful candidate will be employed to work under the supervision of Dr. Dimitris Xygalatas (Director) on experimental studies of religion. The post involves carrying out behaviouralexperimental research in the LEVYNA lab facilities and in naturalistic settings.
Responsibilities include contributing to the training and mentoring of graduate researchers from the humanities who work in experimental methods, providing help with research design and data analysis, and publishing peer-reviewed articles.
Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or any related discipline with a focus on behavioural research (e.g. Behavioural Economics, Behavioural Ecology, Behavioral Neuroscience, etc). The successful candidate will be required to have experience in running empirical studies and good knowledge of statistics and quantitative data analyses (SPSS or other statistical packages). Prior theoretical and empirical knowledge in the area of the scientific study of religion is desirable but not necessary.
The position will be located at the LEVYNA Laboratory for the Experimental Research of Religion, in Brno, Czech Republic, an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to the use of experimental methods in researching religious belief and behaviour. LEVYNA is hosted by the Department for the Study of Religion at Masaryk University, and is a senior partner of the Cultural Evolution of Religion Research Consortium (CERC). The centre has excellent connections with all major Cognitive Science of Religion centres.
The post is a full-time position starting September 2013. The appointment will be made for one year, renewable contingent upon external funding.

AHRC has one call out, and have announced they will make another call later in the year for capital funding in the digital transformations area.
This first call, which has deadline already 27th June, is for projects related to community engagement in particular, under the ttle “Digital Transformations in Community research, Co-production in the Arts and Humanities”. Projects can be from £50 to £600K and a total of £4M is available.
Kingston University has recently advertised some PhD scholarships. Proposals in the sociology of religion are most welcome.
